Peaceful coexistence. Two very strong words, but how many people really live by it?
Well…we can think of a few – our artisanal folks at Himalayan Haat!
It all started just two years ago, when Divya Chowfin, along with her husband, decided to move back home to Pauri, Garhwal, after spending 15 years in Delhi. Let’s go back to that time and see what happened.
Her mother, a retired school teacher, used to regularly make preserves, sauces, concentrates and other items from all the seasonal produce available in and around the village. On one of these instances, she made some of it in excess so Divya decided to share it with her friends. On receiving all the positive feedback from them, she realised that she was sitting on a gold mine this whole time. The rest, as they say, is history.
Divya decided that these products shouldn’t just be limited to her home and deserved a wider audience. Thus, Himalayan Haat was born, coexisting peacefully with nature as the company follows the concept of ‘jungle farming’ which is as close to natural farming as can be – they use leaf mould from the forest and cow dung as fertilisers and their fruit trees are planted in between oaks and wild trees. At no stage is any chemical used on the crops or trees.
They lose a considerable percentage of produce to wild animals and birds, but feel privileged to share the living spaces with these creatures. They grow strawberries, citrus fruit, walnuts, pears, peaches, plums, apricots, herbs like rosemary, chamomile, lemongrass, bay leaf, and seasonal vegetables on the farm.
Not only are there plenty of goodies for the indigenous fauna, but, it helps the local women employed with them in becoming financially independent.
It is a win-win situation for everyone involved – from the local people to the local animals and birds to us folks residing in the city.
These are the artisans that our food hall proudly associates with, as products born out of their hard work makes AnnaMaya one of the best places to eat in Delhi, offering healthy food recipes, as well as organic food products. Not just this, because of all the locally sourced ingredients, we are able to offer some of the best deals on food!
